Acupuncture has been around for a few thousand years and there's a reason for that. It works!
There is a lot of controversy about how it works, whether the acupuncture meridians exist or not, if it is energy-based, anatomical or a mix of both.
I personally believe that Acupuncture works on several levels and, with our current degree of knowledge we are not able to completely understand them all. The key here is to have an open mind.
Several studies have shown that Acupuncture is able to reset your nervous system and bring it back to balance. This will result in increased blood flow, decreased inflammation and release of natural painkillers like endorphins. Acupuncture achieves this without any chemicals or side effects.
Even if we assume that this is all that Acupuncture does, the applications are endless and make Acupuncture an amazing tool in dealing with a very wide range of complaints from pain, insomnia, and anxiety to digestive and gynecological problems, to name just a few.
If I would have to pick the top two things that Acupuncture is excellent for, one would be pain and the other chronic stress.
Chronic stress, either physical or emotional is in my mind the root of most of our troubles. Chronic stress will, in time, lead to blockages, chronic inflammation, a weaker immune system and it will open the door for more serious illnesses like cancer and heart disease.
Acupuncture will not only address the specific complaint you came for, but it will also re-educate your nervous system to deal better with stress in the future. This is crucial for the body as all healing, elimination of waste, regeneration of tissues and building immunity occur while we are in the rest and digest or parasympathetic mode.
I'm Cristina Soava, a licensed Acupuncturist living in Amsterdam.
Although I studied Economics and worked for quite a while in a corporate environment, I've always been interested in people, their psychology and why they do what they do.
For a very long time, I fantasized about becoming a therapist. That changed when I started seeing a therapist myself and realized after a while that talking about your emotions is nice and indeed helpful, but simply not enough, you actually need to work with the body as well.
Fast forward a few years and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture came on my path. I was confused and intrigued by it at first and it took me some time to realize that it had that body & mind connection that I was looking for. In TCM nothing happens in isolation, everything is connected and emotions directly affect our physical bodies.
I believe that unprocessed emotions and internal conflicts ultimately lead to physical complaints and as acupuncturists, we are in a unique position of being able to help both body and mind by holding a space where physical and emotional healing can take place.
I love what I do and I consider myself very lucky and honored to be able to help you feel better in your body. I do not take this lightly and I am continuously researching, learning and looking for new ways to do things. This is a life-long task and I am up for it.
I work with all health conditions however have a special interest in women’s issues including menstrual complaints, fertility, and menopause.
Please be assured that I will do my very best to help you!
